Utilizing the body as a vessel and movement as a vehicle I will show you the stories of my past and how they have shaped my understanding of interconnectivity. I will show you the fierceness in my hands that have paved many paths from pain. I will show you that Meh Mudda(My Mother) can still impact this world, even though she is long gone, and how the waters she now inhabits can be a catalyst for change. It's through the use of movement that I will foster an understanding of what it means to be an entity in conflict. Our environment, our waters, our communities are all in distress, facing climate change, pollution, racism, sexism, homophobia, and other problems that can harm us. This harm is why I have chosen to work at a global scale, and then look at the issues we face in our various communities using the environment as a connector. By discussing the environment, something shared by everyone regardless of their background, identity or beliefs can find a connection. I see the water as a great connector, with the ability to reach anyone and everyone.
Through my work you will see your environment and the issues that it faces. Our environment is in distress, the very thing that nurtures us and provides for us is in a constant state of harm. Yet we never pay attention to it or try to support it. I never paid attention to our environment, not until my mothers ashes found their way to Ganga (the river). It was only by viewing the water as a connection to my mother was I able to find a relationship to the water. My ancestral ties to the water, and my mother. are what sparked my interest in our waters and the environment in which we live in. My mother and the water are now one and the same, and, because of this I want to understand the water and use my body as its voice. So that I can speak with it, and bring awareness to the ways we can move forward to better our care for our environments and the places we call home.
I have done this through the creation of multimedia works featuring spoken words, visual art, theater and dance. When I choreograph, I pull movement through the practice of site-specific gesture, somatic induced movement and historical information to influence and create my pieces. I then document these movements and spoken word instigations so that they can live on in a digital format to be shown on my website, in gallery spaces, outdoor installations and in other platforms, These documentations also inform live performances that are done on the stage, in the streets, public locations and in spaces that are often forgotten or labeled as unconventional. These could be parking lots, empty buildings, and alleyways (dead ends). Through the use of performance art, I investigate connection, conflict and our environment. I am able to reach an audience, create new perspectives and spark conversations about our current situation so that we can move forward to a brighter situation.
